The “checkerboard” cover you have pictured for this is the generic cover RCA issued while they were awaiting reprints of the original cover which had sold out (as can be seen on the ebay auction results.). I have the same “checkerboard” cover on a “Peter Gunn” TV Mancini soundtrack from the era.

Interesting! I thought the generic “checkerboard” cover was used for the first pressing because the custom “picture frame” cover wasn’t ready in time for first release. Are you certain the picture frame cover was issued before the checkerboard one and not after?

BTW, regarding the records shown on this page (assuming they are original to their sleeves), the “checkerboard” is the earlier of the two, as it’s label has the small “Living Stereo” at the bottom.

The title of the Mono version of this album was “Overtures in Spades”. I’m still wondering why RCA didn’t use the same cover for the Stereo version.

Has this ever seen the light of day on CD or download? I keep hoping that it might. I have the mono LP version. ( But if I give up hoping, it might show up…)

This has been transferred to CD by Japanese RCA in their RCA Red Seal Vintage Collection in a 2-CD album containing the three Brahms piano quartets, and the Trout quintet. It is a 24bit/96kHz transfer, and sounds very good, very clean. Of course there is no way to tell if the original session masters were used in making the transfers. The recordings were made in several halls: Manhattan Center, Town Hall, and an RCA studio all in New York of course. Aside from a bit of information like this, and the recording dates, everything else is in Japanese. There is what is clearly a discography at the back of the booklet, but I haven’t tried to decipher opus numbers to see if I could pick up any information. It would probably be easier to get a Japanese speaker to translate it for me. I have no clear memory of how I got the CDs; I recall vaguely that an importer in Vancouver brought them in, and they weren’t cheap, but I indulged myself for once because the performances are quite beautiful.. Try Ebay, that sticks out in my memory. I just tried Youtube Festival Quartet and got nothing. Good luck.
