Holy Grail! The Royal Ballet (LDS 6065) Will Be Added Soon

by Mark Wieman on November 18, 2011

The rare and expensive LDS 6065 — The Royal Ballet, Gala Performances conducted by Ernest Ansermet — is considered by many to be the most desirable title in the Living Stereo series, and it will be coming soon to this website.

Thanks to the generous Scott Campbell of Scott Campbell LPs, I was able to photograph this exceptional 2LP set in all its glory. Below is a shot of the clothbound slipcase. I’ll be adding the rest of the shots, as well as a new section devoted to the multi record sets, in coming days. Enjoy!

Hello, I recently inherited The Royal Ballet Gala 2 record lap with book from Italy and insert. The records are in pristine condition. There are a few of the same albums I see that range anywhere from 100 to 2000 dollars. How do I know how to price mine as they all look similar. What are the main things to look for. Please help, Nea

Hi Nea,
The Italian edition of this set came in a one piece gatefold jacket, and it says “RCA Italiana” on the front, at the upper right. It has the same catalogue number as the US edition, LDS 6065 for stereo, LD 6065 for mono. The US edition only came in a slipcase box. In nice used condition the Italian issue should sell for about $200, maybe up to twice that if it is in perfect condition. That’s just a guess. The Italian pressing doesn’t come up too often, so you can never be sure exactly what it will go for. Even if it is the mono version, it is still worth something, maybe $50 or more. I hope this helps.

Hi Nea. Take a look at the labels on the records themselves. Do they say “Living Stereo” on them? If so, you have the stereo issue, which is more valuable than the mono version. Also, do the labels say “Made in U.S.A.”? The US version is also more valuable than other versions. You mention the records are in pristine condition. Look at them carefully under bright light and make sure they are free of scratches, scuffs, warps, pressing imperfections (like small bumps). Do you see any “spindle trails” (faint, curvy lines) around the holes? These would indicate some amount of previous use (and wear). Are the surfaces free of dirt and dust? Is there any sign of moisture ever having been on the records, cover, or inserts? Do the records or cover smell musty? These are all things to point out in your description if you post it on eBay. If you want more advice on the process, feel free to email me directly: info@shadeddog.com. Thanks and good luck!
